Lawn Bowls is a sport in which the objective is to roll biased balls so that they stop close to a smaller ball called a “jack” or “kitty”. It is played on a pitch which may be flat (for “flat-green bowls”) or convex or uneven (for “crown-green bowls”). It is normally played outdoors although there are some indoor venues and the surface is either natural grass or artificial turf.
So that’s the technical explanation for lawn bowls. We’d rather explain it like this: Lawn bowls is known as a sport that usually old fogies play, however like everything it has a cycle and it’s starting to become ‘cool’ again. You don’t need to wear that sexy white ‘get up’ anymore…hell you don’t even need to wear shoes!! We’re talking about Barefoot Bowling people!!!
Grab your mates together and organise a bowls session at our local bowling club in Yarraville. They are happy to host bucks parties until dusk…because after then you won’t be able to see as they have no lights on the greens. Casual clothing is all that is required, along with a fun attitude and some icy cold beer or champagne.
Don’t forget your camera though, you don’t want to miss the classic crackerjack action and not be able to share it with everyone on Facebook!
